Grant Summary: National Teacher Certification


National Teacher Certification Grant for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certification

Program Description: Awarded by the Wisconsin state superintendent, the National Teacher Certification Grant provides partial reimbursement of costs associated with the National Board process and 9 annual grants of $2,500 to practicing PK-12 educators certified by NBPTS. NBPTS Certification is effective for ten years.

Amount of Funds Available:

  1. Reimbursement of Costs Associated with the National Board Process

    After receiving their certificate and within the first year of its effective date, National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) who meet eligibility requirements below may apply to the department for reimbursement of up to $2,000 for expenses they incurred related to the process of becoming NBPTS certified. This may include partial costs of the application fees that were not subsidized.

  2. Nine Year Annual Grant

    NBCTs who have received reimbursement for certification expenses (above) and meet eligibility requirements below are eligible to apply for a $2,500 annual grant in each of the subsequent nine years of the effective dates of their NBPTS Certificate. Beginning in the 2007-08 school year NBCTs who are employed as teachers in a high poverty school are eligible for a $5,000 annual grant.

Who is Eligible to Apply:

  1. Initial Reimbursement of expenses related to NBPTS certification: National Board Certified Teachers who are employed as teachers in Wisconsin public schools and are licensed by the state superintendent or are employed as teachers in a private school located in Wisconsin.

  2. 9 Year Annual Grant - NBCTs who have received Initial Reimbursement (above) and maintain their certification by the NBPTS, maintain their state license as a teacher and remain employed as a teacher in this state, (or remain employed in a private school located in this state.)

Application Due Dates:

  1. Initial Reimbursement: The department will mail the reimbursement form to NBCTs upon notification from NBPTS of certified Wisconsin teachers. The claim for reimbursement of expenses related to NBPTS certification must be submitted prior to June 30th of the school year in which the NBCT received certification or, if certified in another state, upon meeting all eligibility requirements.
