Definitions


10161-1 and 10161-2 Information and documentation - Open Systems Interconnection - Interlibrary loan application Protocol Specification - Part 1 and Part 2. These International Standards Organization documents define the functionality of an interlibrary loan management system. This standard also defines how different interlibrary loan management systems can exchange data making it possible to include requests that originated in multiple interlibrary loan systems into a single request database. This standard does not have free online access.

Z39.50 refers to the International Standard Organization's ISO Z39.50. The standard specifies a client/server-based protocol for searching and retrieving information from remote databases.

NCIP refers to the American National Standards Institute/National Information Standards Organization's, ANSI/NISO Z39.83 2002. The standard is intended to facilitate communication between diverse circulation and interlibrary loan systems. The standard defines circulation transactions such as placing holds or reserves, checking-out, renewing or checking-in items between remote systems. Version 2.0 was approved in summer 2008.
